1. Who are your biggest artistic influences?
(Vincent Van Gogh, Charmaine Olivia, Jel Ena, Gustav Klimt?)
I’m inspired by the artwork of Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh, especially their black & white drawings.
Many poets & spoken word artists from the past with a Sufi influence; I think of Rumi, Omar Khayam and Khalil Gibran.
I admire female artists like Maya Angelou and Frida Khalo. Also songwriters and rappers from my generation like Frank Ocean & Kendrick Lamar have influenced a lot of my spoken word style.
2. What is your favorite art medium?
(Photography, Paint, Pencils, Pastels, Musical instrument, etc…)
I have many favorite art mediums : drawing, painting, film making, theater, and writing obviously.
3. What inspires and motivates you to create?
(Emotions, experiences, other people's art, going to an art store, etc.)
The everyday life and people that I meet and connect with in the streets.
The connection with other artists and the transmission of knowledge.
I believe Art is contagious somehow. I realized once I started hanging out with illustrators &
going with them to figure drawing sessions, that I can actually draw pretty well. Which I never imagined before.
It’s magic!
It’s beautiful how we inspire each other to try new mediums and explore different aspects of our creativity.
I’m sensitive to my environment and inspired by emotions mostly, that I express in my words or drawings.
4. Do you have an art routine?
(Every Saturday morning? Late at night when everyone is asleep?)
Actually, I used to have a routine of writing 3 morning pages in my journal, what we call stream of consciousness.
Which I believe improved my creativity a lot.
Lately I’ve been drawing a lot in the subway or at Union Square to stop the hustle and bustle of the city.
I wear my headset, play my music and go into a flow. I also like to go to figure drawing class or draw from a
coffee shop and in bars.
5. What value does art provide to the world?
Art is healing. It’s an emotional alchemy. It’s about transforming the pain into something beautiful and powerful.
Art is activism, it’s raising awareness about sensitive topics. Art should challenge the belief systems!
If it triggers, it means it works!
6. If you experience a creative block, how do you overcome it?
(Visit a museum? Take a walk? Social Media Break?)
I’ll go to a museum or any art event for inspiration.
Running, swimming, tennis, any physical activity really helps me a lot too.
Also I believe Breath-work is a powerful technique for enhancing creativity.
7. What is your favorite quote about art?
There’s no must in Art because Art is free.
Wassily Kandinsky
8. What would your art dream project be?
(Create Street Art? Collaborate with a fav artist? Sketch one fav piece in all the museums in the world!)
An art exhibition that combines different mediums of expression : moving images, sounds & performances.
Directing and acting in an independent film as well.
9. What would be the dream art patron?
(Beyonce? Prince Harry? Harry Potter?)
VALERIA NAPOLEONE
10. Is there an art medium that you would like to learn one day?
(Film a movie? Oil Painting? Sing?)
Painting, printmaking, screen acting
11. Do you have any rituals to get you in the mood to create?
(For instance: Lighting a candle and playing your favorite music? A certain time of day?)
I believe being in nature, music, and dance all get me in the mood. I also love to practice one line drawing as a form of meditation.
12. What is an art hack that you learned or discovered that was a game changer in your art practice?
(For instance: Using a scale divider to achieve accurate proportions in a drawing. Old paint brushes to get interesting textures. etc.)
Create simply.
I use my iPhone to make documentaries, which is a statement.
I’m learning to let go of perfectionism & embrace more freedom in creativity.
13. Tell us about the art you create and what you want to achieve with it.
(For instance: To relax? Art activism? To make someone smile?)
Artistic activism through spoken word. On stage I perform boldly to raise awareness about societal issues.
