Artist Spotlight: Gabriella

Gabriella is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator that creates beautifully layered abstract paintings, playful and sensual figure drawings, and mixed-media fabric wall hangings. Her abstract paintings have ethereal color combinations, the color palette is like a lovely and soft tv screen glitch, giving it a modern yet nostalgic twist. Check out her instagram, scroll down until you come to the tulips, they are in rich glossy colors where each petal looks like an abstract painting within the petal. I feel honored to share Gabriella work and her interview and I hope you enjoy her art and thoughts on art as much as I do!

What is your favorite art medium?

(Photography, Paint, Pencils, Pastels, Musical instrument, etc…)

My favorite art mediums are acrylic paint with texture mediums, watercolors, and oil pastels.

What inspires and motivates you to create? (Emotions, experiences, other people's art, going to an art store, etc.)

I feel more myself and whole when I am creating on a regular basis. When I became an art teacher in 2015, my own creative and art practices went out the window and I felt it. So a couple years ago I started re-committing to myself and I’m so much fuller.

If you experience a creative block, how do you overcome it? (Visit a museum? Take a walk? Social Media Break?)

Journaling has really helped me in my creative process in general, specifically morning pages, the idea from Julia Cameron’s book “The Artist’s Way.” I truly notice a difference in my creative flow when I am consistent in writing my morning pages. They’re a game changer.

What is your favorite quote about art? (There are so many good ones!) I really love and resonate with the quote: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” by Thomas Merton.

I think it’s so true. You can get lost in creating or looking at art, yet by the time you’ve finished you could have a million new realizations and perspectives.

Is there an art medium that you would like to learn one day?

(Film a movie? Oil Painting? Sing?)

I would love to try pottery. I’ve never tried throwing on a wheel and love the idea of being that connected to your body while making something. Do you have any announcements you would like to share? (For instance: Show coming up? Published?)

I am in the process of planning a solo show before the end of the year. It was something that I really wanted for myself this year and now it’s crunch time but I’m determined to make it happen!
